Big Day with Bat: Jones 5-5
Thursday, May 22nd, 1997
It wasn't poetic justice. Alex Jones of the Green Sox had a terrific 5-hit game today, really socking it to the Duluth HS Dogs, but his team didn't win the game. In the clubhouse after the 9-2 loss, he moaned to the press, "Hey, I don't want to sound ungrateful, but something is missing here. When you have a great game you should win the game, too." And he definitely had an unforgettable day in the batter's box, ripping out 5 hits in 5 at-bats. The manager for the Green Sox sympathized with his third baseman and told BNN reporters after the game, "Alex played a whale of a game, but sometimes individual brilliance is not enough to win... baseball is a team sport... it takes more than just one player to win a game." Alex Jones doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off Nelson Saunders in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
Presently Jones is batting .317 with 46 hits and 7 home runs. He has knocked in 26 runs and scored 32 times.
